Race season is upon us, and while many spring events have already passed, the calendar ahead is stacked with exciting challenges. One such event is the Saltire 24, happening this June. For trail and ultrarunners, preparing in advance for race day needs is crucial. Rest, mental strategies, and getting to the start line organized, well-rested, and confident are key to a successful race day. Here’s a comprehensive checklist tailored for Saltire 24 to ensure your planning goes smoothly.
Gear
Familiarizing yourself with the course, climate, and weather is essential. Saltire 24’s Scottish location can bring unpredictable weather, so pack accordingly:
- Clothing Layers: Prepare for varying temperatures by packing extra layers, arm sleeves, and rain gear. The evening may be cooler, so bring thermal layers and a headlamp for running in the dark. Arm sleeves can also be used for cooling down if the sun does come out – ice or cold water can be put on them to cool the peripheries.
- Sunscreen & Midgy Bite Cream: Protect your skin from sunburn and those pesky Scottish midges. Include a lightweight, long-sleeve shirt and a cap. Midges tend to be attracted to dark clothing, so have something light-coloured also to wear if it is especially bad.
- Footwear: Bring extra pairs of shoes, socks, and laces. Wet conditions might necessitate frequent changes. I personally use injinji socks, which have toe spacers and seem to work well with no blisters. Also prep your feet with tape 2-3 hours before so that they are bedded in prior to running.
