Saltire 24 – The return.

The Saltire24 Endurance Run is not for the faint-hearted. It pushes athletes to their limits, testing their physical and mental stamina. This blog delves into the unforgettable experience of participating in the Saltire24, highlighting the incredible moments shared by teammates, volunteers, competitors, and the incredible support from friends and family.

Team Mates: Going into the Unknown

As we embarked on this epic journey, our team of brave/daft individuals were venturing into the unknown (although we had been here a year ago, the course differed and our fitness levels differed). The shared anticipation and excitement fueled our spirits. Together, we embraced the challenges ahead, supporting and motivating each other every step of the way. The bond forged during the Saltire24 will forever hold a special place in our hearts (Hello it’s me Mario).

Volunteers: Enthusiastic Cheers, Dance, and High Fives

The Saltire24 would not be possible without the enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers. Throughout the course, their infectious energy filled the air as they cheered us on, danced alongside us, and provided countless high fives. Their unwavering support and encouragement gave us the strength to push through the toughest moments, making the experience truly memorable. The importance of Tick health was tested by none other that chief Rebel Tom – showing that ticks will almost bite everywhere!!

Competitors: Smashing It, Running as Pairs, Running in Groups

Witnessing competitors pushing their limits and achieving remarkable milestones was awe-inspiring. Some incredible individuals conquered over a hundred miles, while others formed strong pairs or groups, embodying the power of teamwork and camaraderie. Some even signing up to the event lastminute, or bravely changing from a pair to solo efforts so they can spend time together. I think there was a pair that ran further holding hands…wasn’t sure there was a prize for this but it certainly should be rewarded – love is the law! Everyones determination and perseverance were truly remarkable, serving as inspiration to everyone around. Thus showed in at least four groups of people pledging to sign up next year as the event was so inspiring – I wrote your names down and will hold you to this – Mike (Munro), Nicola (Cruickshank), Jenni (Rees-Jenkins) and Dave (More)….sign on the dotted line 🙂

Making Friends out of Strangers

The Saltire24 had an incredible knack for bringing together like-minded individuals, turning strangers into friends. From the start line to the finish, we found ourselves surrounded by friendly faces, sharing stories, laughter, and encouragement. The sense of community that emerged from the event was truly heartwarming, and many lifelong friendships were formed. The incredible hulk made an appearance, as did Mario & Luigi ( Steve – do you know the difference yet?). On one night lap the phrase “thoughts are NOT facts” was born. It was passed through the loop like wildfire – soon the whole field were scribbling their thoughts and mantras in the “Steve’s Condolence Book”. There were quotes that helped in the darkest moments and quotes that inspired but the one that stood out was ” You ARE strong”.

The Course: A Breathtaking Journey through Knockburn’s Beauty

Running amidst the breathtaking scenery of Knockburn was a feast for the senses. The vibrant gorse bushes (smells of holiday), the serene loch at times looked inviting, and the warm rays of the sun created a picturesque backdrop for our endurance run. However, the beauty came with a cost—the notorious midgies tested our mental resilience as we pressed on, determined to conquer the course. They literally get everywhere, I think I can still feel them. The evening brought shooting stars and a crescent moon that provided the sliver of resilience against the dark night that all the runners were reflecting.

The Night: Owls, Bats, Sunrise, Rain, and Headtorches

As darkness descended, a new adventure awaited. Running under the starry night sky, accompanied by the hoot of owls and the swoop of bats, was an otherworldly experience. The Rebel lights that have highlighted previous feats of strength in the instructor led classses, were now dressed in multi-colours lighting up the forest in a welcoming light zone which just surpassed last years (if you know then you know). The stunning sunrise brought renewed energy. When the sun broke, the business end of the race arrived. Not even the unexpected rain challenged our resolve, it helped cool us down. Our trusty headtorches illuminated the path ahead, guiding us through the night. Through to the last push.

Portapotties: Where All Hell Broke Loose

Ah, the porta potties—the infamous gathering spots where runners shared amusing and, at times, chaotic tales. No queues but shared struggles created a sense of unity and humor amidst the chaos. There was talk of someone napping in the toilets… there was a rating scale from the hall toilets 8/10, to the block toilets 8.5/10 to the porta potties 7/10 sliding to a 4/10, to a wild pee that wouldn’t be beat 9/10 as the sun came up over the serene loch. These moments served as a reminder that even in the face of adversity, we can find laughter and camaraderie….and that some people literally can sleep anywhere (Steve Taylor).

Team Rebel: Making the Event a Huge Success

Among the participants, Team Rebel stood out as the unsung heroes of the Saltire24. Their dedication, organization, and behind-the-scenes efforts made the event run smoothly. I am sure Scott Adams cycled, ran, walked, carried water – it was like watching his very own crossfit WOD (Workout of the day). Their commitment to ensuring a seamless experience for all participants did not go unnoticed, and we owe them a tremendous debt of gratitude. Dancing, high fiving and just being good people doesn’t go un-noticed by the runners – it makes the event atmosphere a space to perform and excel. Tom and Alice (and the McAra tribe) were like busy ants just getting on with whatever issue arose, dealing with it with a smile on their face and love in their heart. They have made this event their own by making it like them….warm, welcoming, fun, thrilling and enjoyable to be in the company of. Also the Taylors well done on marking some of the course, and offering the support when needed. Robert – well done on not eating all our food this year – close but not all.

Friends and Family: The Pillars of Support

Lastly, we cannot forget the unwavering support of friends and family who cheered us on at every turn. Their presence, encouraging words, and provision of sustenance kept our spirits high throughout the race. Their dedication to being there, taking pictures, offering advice, providing food, fetching things etc reminded us of the strength that comes from the support of loved ones. And whats more – we all arrived as strangers and we left, graduating from the class of Saltire24 (the Return) as friends.

Special shout out to The Hill of Banchory Hurricanes / Bex Watt & Eilidh Gilbert / Lynne Herd / Sophie Carracher / Leeanne Brown – what a fantastic achievement and show of endurance. We as a team were in awe of your performances and test of mettle. Well done – the pain is temporary, pride is forever.

Thanks for reading – please spread the word of this event share the story – you could be next to me in the porta-pottie queue next year 🙂 (heaven forbid).
